What is Biblically based mental health care?
Biblically based mental healthcare
We believe in a Biblically centered approach to holisitic care. But what does that really mean? At Saxum Counselling and Coaching we believe in the power of faith, the Holy Spirit, and being true to the word of God. We are an evidence based practice who see the immense value in true holistic care; mind, body, soul and spirit. As an evidence-based practice, trained in the most modern therapeutic training and modalities, we pride ourselves in bringing a Biblically spiritual element into our sessions as well. This means involving God in the process of healing, restoration, and the therapeutic journey. That may come in many different avenues and format, but God is at the center of everything we do.
As someone who had been to therapy for years before entering into my Masters program for Counselling Psychology, I had a very frustrating experience that opened my eyes to the world of mental health care. I wanted and needed therapy, but found it challenging to find a Christian therapist who was true to a conservative view of therapy and counselling. Many claimed to be Christian in their values, but going through the therapy process there were distinct discrepancies between their claims and the way therapy was practiced. Trusting a professional with life’s deepest concerns and issues is a challenging and vulnerable position to be in. But I trusted my therapists and went into the process with an open heart and mind. I found out so much later down the road that they did not truly hold a Biblical perspective. Often leading me into a watered down approach to faith, one that was not congruent with the teachings of Jesus that I knew to be true. Once entering formalized practice after my education, I found this even more challenging. My experience was that I entered into internships and trainings, run by Christians, who promoted unbiblical worldviews, on issues that the Bible were very clear on. Often interpreting scripture in a way that best suited the often liberal world of therapy. While I valued the training and vast experience that many in these spaces provided, I could not conform to the ways of the world while also staying true to my faith and convictions. This led me to open up my own practice, a place and space where we are passionate about involving God in your mental health journey.
We are also an evidence-based practice who see the immense value in modern day applications of therapeutic treatment. At Saxum Counselling and Coaching, we believe that true healing can only come from Jesus and His teachings. This is a place where Biblical values and modern day practice are merged together to bring holistic care to every individual have the honor of serving.
